Chromascapes

Chromascapes is a series of color abstractions made using glass, cellophane, and water with a moving light source, captured over a long exposure to create a composite of light and time. Through this body of work, I attempt to evoke a sense of wonder at the beautifully otherworldly environments that can be made visible through a camera. In using the camera’s ability to portray time as a flat object, we are able to view these constructions of moving light that, when viewed naturally, appear fragmentary. In this way, the camera is divorced from its conventional connotation as a tool of documentation. Instead, the camera becomes an instrument of discovery, allowing us to explore these environments of light that inherently elude our natural sight.

CHROMASCAPES

In this work, the camera functions as a type of viewing device—using long exposures with moving light sources to reveal hidden worlds of abstracted form and color that would ordinarily elude our natural sight. In the process of making these photographs, each scene is slowly explored through test images, made to uncover the unique ways in which light interacts with the artificial landscape. Integral to this work is its underlying simplicity. Requiring only basic materials, the camera is able to capture these scenes of otherworldly, celestial beauty, solely made visible through the distortions of light and time.
